The conversion of a former croft cemetery into a park with playground equipment for children transforms a half-forgotten walk-through garden into a site of active fun where people of all ages will find ways to wind down. The design works with three basic principles - activating the park boundary, enabling free movement within, and introducing new additions to the existing structures. The project was created in cooperation between an architect, a landscape architect and an artist based on winning the public tender competition for architectural solution.

The original fencing along the Hlohovská Street was newly positioned behind the chapel, the enlarged pavement, a so called piazzetta, created more generous entrance to the park from this thoroughfare. Based on an outcome of a meeting with the residents of neighbouring houses access wickets were added for those of the residents who chose so in selected spots of their gardens. The gate in a new fencing along Rázusova Street follows the gate on the opposite side leading to the nearby Associational Garden, which the city council is planning to open.

The New Park is perceived as a singular playground in a shade. All shrubs and other barrier species of woody plants were removed. Full-grown deciduous trees with underpassable treetops were treated and younger trees were added so as to prevent the break-up of the green area and also to support its further growth. The additional planting creates an extension of the zigzag tree arrangement of the original alley into a diagonal tree grid across the entire area of the park. Maintaining gaps around the root system of the trees, the area was stabilized with a walkable gravel surface, thus relieving the only existing thoroughfare axis.

The historical layer of the original cemetery structures was preserved. The chapel became a landmark of the piazzetta, roadside crucifixes on both sides of the original alley still open up the entrances to the park. Crafted gravestones were displayed in a new lapidary next to the gate from piazzetta. The inner park area was enhanced mainly by new ready-made objects originating from industrially manufactured engineering elements, certified as playground equipment. In comparison to the made-to-measure atypical counterparts these are an economically more convenient alternative, and in comparison to the standardized playground equipment they offer a fresh solution inviting the children to explore and develop their imagination. Apart from these functional sculptures new public furniture including benches, dustbins, bike racks and public lighting were installed.

VICTORY SQUARE

/competition entry/co-author Filip Kusák/Praha/2018

The project was triggered by an obligatory plan to build up the north-western quadrant, whose ongoing activities such as weekend farmers´ markets or various not only students´ festivals indicate what is the existing potential of incomplete square and what will be the most missing factor after its completion – just ideal emptiness of generous, diverse and user-open public space. The design of adaptation the Victory Square returns this central public space of the municipal district Prague 6 to its users through three initial principles of concept – the reorganization of traffic flows linked to opening of inner areas to pedestrians and cyclists, the contemporary interpretation of Engels´ geometrical organization of square and the preservation of spaces for free movement as well as for possibility to place ephemeral or other small-scale architectural objects.

square/park

/competition entry/co-author Klára Zahradníčková, in cooperation with Luboš Zbranek/park in Moravian Square, Brno/2016

The Moravian Square forms a transition in between a park system of the Brno ring road and a paved pedestrian zone of the city centre. The cityness is represented through the paving of its surfaces, the parkness thereafter through the form of underpassable tree tops which protect the generous square/park against the sunshine.

The design loosens too exposed centre of the park through a concentration of cultural activities along its circumference. These activities try to resuscitate the park surroundings without disturbing the relaxing character of its inner area. The existing peripheral pavement is conspicuously enlarged (up to approx. 20 metres) to enable i. a. temporary buildings placement to relieve its excessive building on a spatially limited squares in the city centre. The inner park area is integrated with stabilized soil which enables free passing of pedestrians as well as provides a relaxing area in such generosity missing in the central area of the city. New surfaces and city furniture follow the existing ones which are in accordance with the project and don´t fulfil their lifespan. On the circumference of the park can be used existing mobile buildings and furnishings.

Despite the competition requirements of a cultural space without markets, the project includes these as well. Their previous placement along the existing inner park paths really seemed to be problematic towards overloading of paths as well as their surrounding grassy areas - access and supply shortcuts. On the other hand such activities (feasts, celebrations, concerts, meetings...) are integral part of a vital city environment. Their programmatic content on the broadened park edge creates active border within the city centre, the ring road and the neighbouring quarters and redefines the existing boundless image of the park in between the traffic communications.

FOLIES

/festival design/in cooperation with Tomáš Řepa and Ladislav Mirvald/Malá Amerika, Brno/2016

An installation in a railway station storehouse reorganizes its interior according to needs of this year´s comics festival KOMA. A medium is a stretch foil tight in between inner structural elements which serves also as a billboard for exhibited comic strips.

NET

/festival design/co-author Jiří Vítek/Malá Amerika, Brno/2015

An ephemeral spatial net created in a former storehouse served for hanging comic strips during the comics festival KOMA in order to let impress newly opened attic of this monumental protected building.

RECONVERSION OF STATE FARM

/competition entry/co-authors Jiří Vítek, Jiří Železný/Doubravník/2015

Former state farm and its site has spatial parameters to became new meaningful element of the municipality Doubravník. The awarded competition design initiates minimal interventions to existing building and its compound aiming to enrich the site such meanings. In sequentially created park with biotop (natural pool) and multifuctional attic, besides public spaces (sitting stairs from street, lawns for lying, playground, courtyard behind the wall of former stalls, public toilets, new access to St. Anna Chapel or riverfronts) there are planned also semi-public and semi-private areas for local residents - doorstep with shared vestibules and winter garden, orchard, vegetable and flower beds. Thanks to the local activists, the attic was first time opened for public due exhibition of competition entries together with their presentations and accompanying program.

Adaptation of Connection Wing of Pražák Palace

/public contract/co-author Jaroslav Sedlák/in cooperation with 4AM and Deep Throat/Brno/2014

On the ring road around the historic city centre of Brno there is a courtyard between the Neo-Renaissance complex of the Pražák Palace (Moravian Gallery) and the Community Hall (Brno Philharmonic). This project adapts their connecting wing placed on the terrain edge of former city walls embankment.

The task is to change the use of an existing conservation workshop to a barrier-free cultural space for lectures, workshops, concerts, exhibition and performing arts projects, movie screenings and similar activities with café, bar and the facilities.

There is no permanent purpose (function), it is just defined the space of existing building and a new space of events. The existing space is not capacious enough even after removing all partitions, therefore the re-initiated space is situational, expanding according to instant needs to the outer courtyard or shrinking into an intimate café. Thus the “interior of the city” (the courtyard) and the adapted building merge in the new gradients of their common floor. The boundaries of proposed architecture are defined by the multiplicity of its cultural programme.

The new permanent interventions are infrastructural (barrier-free adaptation, installations, new entrance door, sanitary facilities, storage/office room. The infrastructure is visible (inner cabling, distribution systems and shafts. The new furnishings are moveable for both interior and exterior use (bar segments, stage platforms usable as work desks, height-adjustable tables, stackable and folding chairs). The ambivalence of the changing space is accentuated by the preserved traces of the former workshop (strip lights reflecting the previous disposition, the texture of concrete floor, different plaster granularity in the places after the removed partitions...) and the use of reclaimed elements (polycarbonate panels from the exposition Images of the Mind, re-installation of bookcases from a book fair or the chairs from online second hand shop.

TRANSFORMATION OF RURAL BUILDING INTO RECREATION COTTAGE

/private contract/Kuželov/2014

The linear house of serially arranged walk-through rooms is opened to the garden. The agricultural area behind building is turned into the exterior residential terrace. All of the storages are placed to existing attic, accessible straight from terrain into which house immerses.

Psychoanalysis of One Space

/exhibition design/in cooperation with 4AM/Praha/2013

Almost no architecture of exhibition. A cleaned space of original, temporary renewed washhouse creates a scene for audio recordings of exposition, introducing a probe into subconcious of former psychiatric hospital laundry in Bohnice. During exhibition newly installed washing machines and washing lines serve public.
